GLOBAL AIDS CRISIS GETS FIRST-EVER GLOBAL AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

Johannesburg, London, New York - Clear Channel Outdoor and UNICEF today launched the first-ever global outdoor advertising campaign to raise awareness of the enormous impact of HIV/AIDS on children. At simultaneous events in Johannesburg, London and New York celebrities joined representatives of the two organizations to unveil a powerful image depicting a young child standing by her parents’ graves. The campaign will be seen on billboards and other outdoor displays in 50 countries around the world.

First Day Hospital for children living with HIV/AIDS opened in Maputo

MAPUTO - UNICEF is confident that the opening of the first Paediatric Day Hospital in Mozambique will boost treatment opportunities for children living with HIV/AIDS in the country. “So far, the vast majority of children born with HIV/AIDS in Mozambique have a very short life, which for most of the time is characterized by a sequence of severe diseases. The treatment and the services offered at the Paediatric Day Hospital in Maputo can improve their quality of life and provide much needed support to their parents and other care-takers“, said UNICEF Representative Marie-Pierre Poirier on Monday during the opening ceremony of the Paediatric Day Hospital. It has been established at the Maputo Central Hospital with the support of UNICEF and the French Embassy.

WIPA dedicates involvement in CWC 2007 to promoting awareness of HIV and AIDS

PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO - “The West Indies Players Association (WIPA) will dedicate it’s involvement in World Cup Cricket 2007 to the issue of HIV/AIDS, with particular focus on children and the goal of protecting the right of all children to healthy recreation and protection against HIV and AIDS, and will work with UNICEF and UNAIDS to develop activities in connection with this event.” The announcement was made by President and CEO of WIPA, Mr. Dinanath Ramnarine at the official launch of a partnership between the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and the West Indies Players Association (WIPA), aimed at promoting awareness of HIV/AIDS, and reducing the vulnerability of individuals and communities, particularly children to HIV.

ACCESS TO HIV THERAPY GREW SIGNIFICANTLY IN 2006, BUT SIGNIFICANT OBSTACLES REMAIN TO APPROACHING UNIVERSAL ACCESS TO HIV SERVICES

London - Access to antiretroviral therapy for advanced HIV infection in low- and middle-income countries continued to grow throughout 2006, with more than two million people living with HIV/AIDS receiving treatment in December 2006, a 54% increase over the 1.3 million people on treatment one year earlier in these countries. These encouraging findings were released today in a new report, “Towards universal access: scaling up priority HIV/AIDS interventions in the health sector,” published by the World Health Organization (WHO), the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and UNICEF.

HIV/AIDS menaces progress in Ukraine

KIEV/NEW YORK/GENEVA - Ukraine is on the threshold of a full-scale HIV/AIDS epidemic, with an estimated quarter of a million people living with HIV/AIDS, UNICEF said today, as its Executive Director Carol Bellamy arrived in the country on an official visit. In addition a large proportion of its population faces a range of iodine deficiency disorders (IDD).

International Community Must Do More To Treat HIV-Positive Children

New York/London - Only one child in twenty who needs HIV treatment receives it, according to a report launched today by seven of the world’s leading child advocacy organizations. The Global Movement for Children (GMC) issued an urgent appeal for the international community to recognize that children with HIV and AIDS have a right to treatment that must be addressed to save their lives and beat the epidemic.
