Trinidad and Tobago

Located in the Caribbean, Trinidad and Tobago is home to more than 1.3 million people. Most children in Trinidad and Tobago have access to basic social services, including health care and primary and secondary education.

AIDS is the leading cause of death for youth and adults 15 to 44 years of age. Unsafe sexual practices are the driving factors of the country's epidemic. Young females between the ages of 15 and 19 have an annual reported incidence of HIV that is three times higher than males within the same age group. Children often encounter stigma in schools and society if they or their family members are affected by AIDS and the number of children orphaned by the disease is increasing.

UNICEF is undertaking interventions to ensure that children both in and out of school have accurate information and practice relevant skills to reduce the risk of becoming infected with HIV. This includes improving access to psychosocial counselling and life skills information. UNICEF is also helping create opportunities for young people to become engaged in activities that promote health, social and physical development. In addition, UNICEF is working to provide young people with a platform for expression, through support of a youth media network.

The Unite for Children, Unite against AIDS campaign is global in its reach. UNICEF’s work for children affected by AIDS is happening in every country affected by the pandemic.

While UNICEF Canada is raising awareness in Canada about how HIV and AIDS is changing the lives of children worldwide, we are focusing our fundraising efforts on projects in these countries: China, Guyana, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Trinidad & Tobago and Ukraine.
